"A two-metre hammerhead shark has been spotted today near a popular Wellington swimming beach.
People aboard a 5.5m recreational boat saw the shark approach their boat, about 1-1.5km of Scorching Bay about midday, Constable Peter Comer from Wellington Maritime Police said.
It swam around the boat a couple of times, then left.
Police warned swimmers in the area, but a Dominion Post reporter at the scene this afternoon said there were still people in the water.
It is the second shark spotted at a Wellington beach this summer. Last week, lifeguards at Lyall Bay warned swimmers to leave the beach after a shark was seen near the airport."
